President’s Report 2008
My term as President has certainly passed quickly. I had very little idea of what takes place behind the scenes to organise an event such as the annual Eisteddfod - I had only ever been an Eisteddfod Mum!
In October 2007 a sub-committee presented our 50th Anniversary Concert in the Maryborough City Hall as a fundraiser. This was well received by the patrons particularly the memorabilia display which this sub-committee painstakingly sort and compiled.
Thank you to all who contributed their talent and expertise to ensure the success of this concert.
The annual dinner was held in November and then a short recess until March 08.
Working as a team the current committee managed to review the programme and procedures of conducting Eisteddfods, in order to present a “user friendly”, dispute free event.
A set of Guidelines for Volunteers, time charts, Blue Card Register and Perpetual Trophy Register were produced.
The Modern Ballad was “modernised” – allowing the use of a microphone for these Items. Hopefully, this may encourage younger people to enter the Eisteddfod.
A new Instrumental Adjudicators Score Sheet for school bands was presented by Ken Hodgkinson. This format was also used for the choirs. The trial was well received and this format should be considered for the use of school items at future Eisteddfods.
Vocal and Instrumental entries were well patronised and the adjudicators had to oblige with tight timelines.
Speech and Drama entries were poor but there was a depth of quality in the competitors. The adjudicator offered extremely constructive and encouraging comments.
The incoming committee should review the future of this Section. i.e. How can Speech and Drama become more attractive? Why are there so few competitors?
It would be a great shame to drop this type of performing art from the programme.
Thank you to the Publicity Officer who made sure that our meeting/events dates were regularly advertised. A thank you also to the Chronicle reporter who published some newsy articles during Eisteddfod week. Unfortunately, due to email difficulties, the results were not actually published as I only got them to the paper after the event.
maryborougheisteddfodinc.com was used by many to download preliminary programmes. Thank you TuGuys for your prompt uploading service!
To the Volunteers and Friends of The Brolga – I sincerely thank each and everyone of you who so generously gave time to our organisation.
A big thank you to the staff at The Brolga Theatre for their cheerful assistance during Eisteddfod week
Thank you to all committee members who worked so hard for the cause - to promote and showcase junior talent in the performing arts.
This year the resignations of Helen Nish and Brenda Tuckwell were received. Helen served as Secretary and Brenda as Music Convenor for some years.
I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of all members, to thank them both for their untiring dedication to this organisation over the past years and wish them all the very best for the future.
It is on this note that I conclude my report and wish the incoming Executive an equally rewarding term in office.
Irene Smith President
