Maryborough first ventured into
Eisteddfod Competitions in 1903.
These early competitions were held in the true Welsh Tradition, showcasing adult and school choral, vocal, pianoforte and instrumental items.
These must have been grand events as dignitaries attending included His Excellency Lieut. Governor Hon W Lennon!
The first Juvenile Eisteddfod was held in 1926 it was called “Children’s Musical Festival”.
The Eisteddfod continued in Maryborough until 1936 when world events interrupted this social occasion.
In September 1957 following a public meeting, presided over by the Mayor, Ald R. A. Hunter, the Juvenile Eisteddfod was revived.
Sections were added to include Literary, Art and Speech and Drama.
Literary and Art have since been dropped from the program.
Sessions were held in the Memorial, Parish, Presbyterian and Town Halls, over two days.
The 1957 Eisteddfod attracted 652 entries however, in 1962 a record number of 1500 entries were received!
Today, The Maryborough Eisteddfod is held in the Brolga Theatre which offers competitors and patrons a one-stop, air-conditioned venue.
The committee hopes that as this event goes from strength to strength, the people and businesses of Maryborough City will continue their support.
